Dear Mr. President, Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Fellow Citizens,
Our nation stands at a critical crossroads. The persistent and devastating scourge of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, has evolved from an environmental crisis into a full-blown national security threat. Despite various institutional interventions, our major river bodies—including the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim—remain heavily polluted, cocoa lands are being systematically destroyed, and the health of millions of Ghanaians is being compromised by toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide. As the Commander-in-Chief, the mandate to protect the territorial integrity and the future survival of the sovereign Republic of Ghana rests on your shoulders, supported by the collective resolve of the Ghanaian citizenry.
To reverse this existential threat and secure our environment for future generations, we must adopt an uncompromising, strategic framework built on enforcement, alternative livelihoods, and institutional accountability.
Key Areas of Immediate Concern
- Destruction of Water Bodies: High turbidity levels have rendered major rivers untreatable by the Ghana Water Company Limited, threatening acute water shortages in multiple regions.
- Cocoa Sector Decline: Vast hectares of fertile cocoa plantations are being cleared for illegal mining pits, directly undermining Ghana's economic backbone and global standing in agriculture.
- Public Health Crisis: The unregulated use of heavy metals is contaminating the food chain, leading to a rise in chronic kidney diseases and congenital abnormalities in mining communities.
- Weaponization and Insecurity: The influx of undocumented foreign nationals and the proliferation of small arms in mining enclaves pose a direct threat to local and national stability.
The Mandate of Our Royal Stools: A Call-to-Action for Traditional Authorities (Chiefs)
Our revered traditional leaders are the historic custodians of Ghana's lands and natural heritage. The battle against galamsey cannot be won from Accra alone; it requires an unyielding stand from the palaces of our kingdoms and paramountcies. We urge our Chiefs to execute the following immediate actions:
- Invoke the Power of the Stool: Actively invoke traditional oversight and customary law to ban all forms of alluvial and illegal mining within your traditional areas, declaring river banks and sacred groves as strictly off-limits.
- Expose the Financiers: Reject any complicity or financial inducements from illegal mining cartels. We call on traditional councils to boldly expose and report both local politicians and foreign nationals operating illegal pits on stool lands.
- Enforce Local Accountability: Hold sub-chiefs, assembly members, and local caretakers strictly accountable if illegal mining thrives under their direct watch, using destoolment or customary sanctions where necessary to cleanse the leadership.
- Champion Community Reclamation: Partner with the state and civil society to lead local youth in land reclamation drives, turning devastated pits back into arable agricultural lands and sustainable community-owned forestry projects.
Strategic Recommendations and Suggestions for the State
- Full Deployment of Military Regimes: Utilize the full apparatus of the Ghana Armed Forces to permanently clear illegal miners from all "Red Zones," including forest reserves, river banks, and buffer zones.
- Strict Judicial Enforcement: Establish dedicated fast-track courts to prosecute arrested individuals, ensuring that both local financiers and foreign collaborators receive maximum statutory prison sentences without the option of a fine.
- Transparency in Mining Licensing: Digitise the entire mining concession mapping system under the Minerals Commission to allow public tracking of valid licenses and expose illegal operations.
- Community-Led Reclamation and Livelihoods: Roll out a robust, state-backed Community Mining Scheme that strictly adheres to environmental standards, paired with land reclamation initiatives that employ local youth to restore degraded forests.
- Independent National Taskforce: Appoint a non-partisan, independent oversight committee comprising civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and environmental experts to audit anti-galamsey operations regularly.
The fight against galamsey is not a political debate; it is a battle for the very survival of Ghana. We cannot boast of economic growth or infrastructure development if the basic elements of life—our water, our soil, and our air—are poisoned. Mr. President, Ghanaians look up to your leadership to execute a definitive, lasting blueprint that halts this destruction once and for all. To our Chiefs, remember that you hold the land in trust for the living, the dead, and generations yet unborn. To my fellow citizens, let us remain vigilant, reject complicity, and protect our heritage. The time to save Ghana is now.
