NDC denies targeting NPP office in Ho demolition exercise to pave way for Big Push road project

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has rejected claims that the recent demolition exercise in Ho was deliberately targeted at the Regional Office of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement issued on Friday, September 18, 2026, and signed by the Regional Communications Officer, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, the NDC explained that the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to remove structures located within road reservations to make way for road construction under the government’s Big Push Project.

The party said the fence wall of the NPP Regional Office was within the road reservation required for the ongoing construction works in the Ho Municipality.

According to the NDC, the project is intended to improve road connectivity and support development in the municipality.

It stressed that the NPP office fence was not the only structure affected by the exercise, noting that several other structures located within the designated road corridor were also removed.

Those affected, the party said, included portions of structures belonging to the AME Zion Church, private residential properties, including a building belonging to Dr. Busah, and an old structure opposite the Guinness premises.

The NDC said the removal of multiple structures demonstrated that the exercise was determined by the location of the affected properties within the designated road corridor rather than their political or ownership affiliations.

Notification issued ahead of demolition

On claims that the NPP Regional Office was not given prior notice, the NDC said the structure had been identified and marked for demolition since the previous year.

It said communication had been made to the NPP Regional leadership through the Ho Municipal Assembly ahead of the exercise.

The party further stated that the Ho Municipal Chief Executive made several attempts to engage the NPP Regional leadership on the matter and invited the Regional Chairman to the Municipal Assembly for discussions.

According to the NDC, those engagements did not materialise.

It therefore dismissed suggestions that the demolition was carried out suddenly, without notice or for political reasons.

The party also rejected claims of hostility in the manner the exercise was conducted, saying steps were taken to minimise damage to property belonging to the NPP.

It explained that metal gates and other removable iron works at the NPP Regional Office were removed before the fence wall was demolished.

The NDC further noted that some technical personnel involved in the municipal engineering works were known to have political affiliations, including individuals associated with the NPP.

It said this further demonstrated that the exercise was administrative and technical in nature rather than a partisan undertaking.

The party cautioned against politicising professional and municipal development activities and urged the public to view the demolition exercise within the context of the road construction project.

It warned that turning such development activities into partisan disputes could create unnecessary political tension.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, respect for due process and development initiatives that benefit residents across the region.

It maintained that the NPP Regional Office was not singled out for demolition but was affected because part of its property fell within the road corridor required for the ongoing construction works.
