Scores of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters in the Kwadaso Constituency of the Ashanti Region have demonstrated against the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Eric Asibey, demanding that President John Dramani Mahama revoke his appointment.
The protesters, made up of ward coordinators, branch executives and other party members, accused the MCE of failing to adequately engage the party’s grassroots structures and address concerns raised about the welfare of supporters and constituents.
During the demonstration, the group submitted a petition to the constituency party executives outlining their grievances against Mr Asibey and calling for action to be taken against him.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, September 16, the NDC Branch Youth Organiser for the Sofoline Branch, Abdul Aziz Haruna, said the grassroots had held several engagements with the MCE and presented recommendations aimed at creating opportunities for party supporters and improving conditions for residents.
He said the failure to act on the concerns raised during those engagements had compelled the protesters to intensify their demands for intervention.
The group is calling on President Mahama, the Chief of Staff, the Minister for Local Government, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and the NDC’s national, regional and constituency executives to take steps to revoke Mr Asibey’s appointment.
The protesters also questioned the distribution of birds under the government’s Nkoko Nketekete initiative, alleging that the constituency received slightly more than 3,000 birds instead of the 10,000 they expected.
Mr Asibey, however, rejected the allegations, insisting that his focus remained on implementing President Mahama’s mandate in the Kwadaso Municipality.
“What they are saying has no evidence. I can say that they are only trying to concoct something for public consumption. There is no discrimination.”
