Mahama announces review of Airport enclave road network amid growing development

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the Ministry of Roads and Highways, together with the Department of Urban Roads, is reviewing the road network around the Airport enclave and the central business district in anticipation of increased traffic from rapid development in the area.

The President said the expansion of residential, commercial, hospitality and other facilities would place additional pressure on existing roads and could intensify congestion if infrastructure improvements were not made.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Sentuo Airport Garden City project on Tuesday, September 15, President Mahama said government had initiated measures to ensure that the road infrastructure in the area keeps pace with ongoing development.

“I want to announce that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Urban Roads have started looking at the road network in the airport enclave and the central business district. Because as developments like this come up, definitely the traffic congestion will also grow,” he said.

He said the review would examine a number of interventions aimed at easing movement, including widening some roads and introducing one-way traffic systems where necessary.

“And so we need to widen the roads, create a system of one-ways, and improve the road network,” he added.

The announcement comes as major developments continue to transform the Airport area, including the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project.

The project is expected to feature premium apartments, a 600-room hotel, a 2,500-capacity conference facility, healthcare facilities, a shopping mall and other commercial and leisure facilities.

President Mahama said the planned road interventions were necessary to ensure that the transport infrastructure within the Airport enclave remains adequate to support the scale of development expected from both the private and public sectors.
