Accra-Kumasi Expressway to have e-tolling

The Managing Director of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, Francis Ahlidza, has announced plans to introduce an electronic tolling system on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, eliminating the need for physical toll barriers along the corridor.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, September 15, Mr Ahlidza said the system will allow motorists to pay tolls electronically through toll cards as they travel along the route.

He said the expressway will have two main toll stations at the Accra and Kumasi ends, as well as six exit toll points along the corridor.

“We plan to have electronic tolling. As you are aware, recently, the Ministry of Roads and Highways went to Parliament to get a concession agreement to introduce e-tolls. And so, for conformity and ease of use across the country, we will introduce a similar system on the expressway,” he said.

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to cover approximately 198.7 kilometres between Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region and Sewua in the Ashanti Region.

The project comprises about 176 kilometres of newly constructed expressway and approximately 23 kilometres of upgraded connector roads at the Accra and Kumasi ends.

The mainline will feature a three-lane dual carriageway on a 36-metre standard roadbed, with a design speed of 120 kilometres per hour.

It will also include eight grade-separated interchanges, 11 vehicle overpasses and 55 mainline bridges, designed to improve safety and ease traffic along the corridor.
