Kwaso Chief applauds Mahama over Accra-Kumasi Expressway, calls for national support

The Chief of Kwaso, Nana Osei Fosu Adutwum, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for his vision and determination to construct the 198.7-kilometre, six-lane Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

Nana Osei Fosu Adutwum made the commendation on Monday at Kwaso, Kumasi, during the handing-over ceremony of the Right-of-Way clearance for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project.

According to the Chief, the decision by President Mahama to pursue the project demonstrates exceptional leadership and a bold vision for Ghana's future.

He said although previous leaders may have considered the idea, President Mahama's decision to translate the vision into concrete action deserves commendation.

Nana Osei Fosu Adutwum recalled that former Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, was foremost among leaders who envisioned such a major road project in 1969, but circumstances and time did not allow him to realise it.

The Chief said he was particularly excited that the project was being undertaken during his tenure as Chief of Kwaso.

“I am excited that such a monumental project is being undertaken in my time as Chief of Kwaso,” he stated.

He commended President Mahama for recognising the importance of an expressway linking Ghana's two major cities and for putting measures in place to accelerate its construction.

Nana Osei Fosu Adutwum subsequently challenged Ghanaians to support the President and the project, stressing that the benefits of the expressway would extend beyond Accra and Kumasi to communities and businesses along the corridor.

Military Engineers complete Right-of-Way ahead of schedule

President Mahama, speaking at the ceremony, also commended the Engineer Regiments of the Ghana Armed Forces for completing the Right-of-Way clearance in 19 weeks, one week ahead of schedule.

In recognition of their work, the President has directed that the Engineer Regiments be honoured with the Order of the Companion of the Volta at the next National Honours.

President Mahama further announced that US$2 billion has been set aside for the project, with the full amount expected to be available by December 31, 2026, without borrowing.

He also announced plans to return to Kwaso before Christmas to break ground for the construction phase.

The six-lane expressway is expected to transform road transportation between Accra and Kumasi, improve the movement of people and goods, and stimulate trade, agriculture, industry and economic activity along the corridor.

For Nana Osei Fosu Adutwum, the project represents a historic opportunity, and his call for collective support underscores the importance of ensuring that the long-awaited Accra-Kumasi Expressway becomes a reality.
