Accra-Kumasi Expressway to feature 8 interchanges, 11 overpasses and 55 bridges

The proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway will include 8 grade-separated interchanges, 11 vehicle overpasses and 55 mainline bridges under a design intended to improve road safety and traffic flow along the corridor.

The Managing Director of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, Engineer Francisco, disclosed the details on Monday, September 14, 2026, during the handover of 175.6 kilometres of cleared right-of-way by the Ghana Armed Forces.

He said the project would stretch approximately 198.7 kilometres from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region. The route would consist of 176 kilometres of newly constructed expressway and about 23 kilometres of upgraded connector roads at the Accra and Kumasi terminals.

According to him, the main expressway would be developed as a Class A highway featuring a three-lane dual carriageway on a 36-metre standard roadbed. It would have a design speed of 120 kilometres per hour, while the Class B connector roads would have a speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour.

The project would also provide 9 at-grade intersections, approximately 200 reinforced concrete box culverts and 4 service areas for motorists to rest, eat and attend to vehicle-related needs.

Engineer Francisco further disclosed that 8 tolling points, an operating centre and 2 monitoring centres would be established to support traffic supervision and facilitate rapid responses to incidents.

Other facilities would include a fire and ambulance station, 3 maintenance depots, road safety installations and electromechanical systems to support the expressway’s intelligent transport system.

He said the project was expected to shorten the distance between Accra and Kumasi by about 50 kilometres, reduce travel time by 50% and lower transportation costs by approximately 40%.

“When completed, this road will provide safer and more reliable transport and reduce the pressure on the N6,” he added.
