Dear critical reader, the Great Depression -era reformist leader FDR was so right in his warning to Americans about the dangers posed to democracy by the egregious perfidies of Wall Street's fascist multi-millionaires.
That said, in today's context, is it not amazing and flabergasting that a thoroughly dishonest, amoral, unprincipled character, who lied his way to the Oval Office in the 2024 election cycle, can spin his way out of the serial ruinous spur-of-the-moment disastrous policy decisions that are lowering living standards of ordinary American families and killing millions of micro-enterprises across the known world, and getting away with it? Incredible.
Boorish President Trump will go down in history as the worst American president in US history. No ifs or buts about that verdict of history that he won't be around to intimidate.
FDR warned us long ago:
"The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism — ownership of Government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power."
And: "Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob."
In 1932 he added that America was steering a steady course toward economic oligarchy, if it was not there already.
Look around today. When tariffs are announced and canceled like tweets, when shipping lanes close and LNG cargoes collapse from 509 to 18, who pays? Not the oligarchs. The micro-enterprise. The ordinary family in Ohio and in Gomoa Buduburam.
If America falls into the hands of oligarchs, as FDR warned, it will be disastrous not just for America, but for all earthlings who depend on a stable America for trade, for peace, for hope.
He was so right.
