'Bawku curfew violation can never justify killing' – CETAG condemns military, demands probe into Gbewa College Lecturer’s death

The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has demanded an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the death of a lecturer at Gbewa College of Education following an alleged encounter with military personnel during curfew hours.

The lecturer, Abdulai Issaka, reportedly sustained severe physical assault after he was allegedly found outside during curfew hours on Friday, September 11, 2026. CETAG said information available to the Association indicated that the incident resulted in his death.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 14, the Association described the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death as deeply disturbing and insisted that any alleged curfew violation could not warrant excessive or lethal force.

“Being outside during curfew hours, irrespective of the circumstances, can never justify the beating of a person to death,” CETAG said.

The Association condemned the reported conduct and called for a comprehensive inquiry into events leading up to, during and after the alleged assault.

It said the investigation must identify the military personnel involved, establish the exact cause of Issaka’s death and determine whether any unlawful actions took place.

CETAG further urged the Government, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and other relevant institutions to ensure that the investigation proceeds without intimidation, interference or preferential treatment based on rank or position.

It also demanded the arrest and prosecution of anyone found culpable in accordance with Ghanaian law.

“No person irrespective of position, uniform, or authority should be above the law,” the Association stated.

CETAG called on the authorities to provide Issaka’s family with full information about the circumstances of his death and ensure that the bereaved relatives receive the necessary support.

The Association appealed for calm at Gbewa College of Education, urging management, staff and students to remain restrained while the investigative and judicial processes unfolded.

It assured staff of the College that its national leadership would continue engaging the relevant authorities to ensure that the matter received the necessary attention.

CETAG expressed condolences to Issaka’s family, colleagues and friends, describing his death as a painful loss to the College, the teaching profession and Ghana as a whole.

The Association added that it would monitor developments and continue engaging state institutions to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death were fully addressed and not ignored.
