Nema Sagara on Trial: Mali's Military Justice Turns on One of Its Own Icons

More than a year after her dramatic arrest, Brigadier General Nema Sagara of the Malian Air Force is finally headed for trial and the timing could not be more revealing of where Mali's military transition now stands.

Mali's prosecutor general at the Supreme Court, Mamoudou Timbo, confirmed in a recent public statement that the investigation into Sagara, fellow general Abass Dembélé, and more than a dozen co-accused officers is in its final stages, with the case set to move to trial soon.

According to Timbo, the officers face a formidable list of charges: conspiracy against the military command, incitement to acts contrary to duty, attempted illegal use of armed force, criminal association, and undermining the internal security of the state. An investigating judge at Bamako's military tribunal has reportedly spent close to a year building the file, which Timbo now describes as nearing completion.

From Military Heroine to Suspect in "Destabilization"

The charges cap a stunning fall for a woman once held up as a symbol of the Malian army's fight against jihadist insurgency. Sagara joined the armed forces in 1986 and trained in Senegal, Nigeria, France, and the United States.

The daughter of a soldier, she became the first female officer to take part in operations to retake northern Mali from armed groups in 2013, rising to become one of the highest-ranking female soldiers on the continent.

That reputation counted for little in August 2025, when Sagara, Dembélé, and dozens of other military personnel many drawn from the national guard were swept up in arrests ordered by the junta led by Assimi Goïta. Both generals were formally indicted for "attempted destabilization" and "undermining state security," then stripped of their military rank in early October along with nine others.

Lawyers for the pair, granted access to their clients only months after the arrests, described Dembélé as gaunt but holding up, while Sagara was said to be struggling under the weight of prolonged detention.

The French Connection and a Pardon
Among those originally implicated was a French intelligence officer, Yann Christian Bernard Vézilier of the DGSE, whose alleged involvement fed suspicions that the case extended beyond an internal military dispute into foreign interference.

Vézilier's file was ultimately separated from the generals' and referred to Mali's specialized anti-terrorism court, given what prosecutors described as his deep links to armed jihadist groups. He was convicted in June 2026 and sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment plus a twenty-year ban from Malian territory only to be pardoned by Goïta himself on August 13, 2026.

The pardon, coming weeks before the prosecutor's announcement on Sagara and Dembélé, has done little to quiet speculation about the political calculations shaping the wider case.

A Trial as a Test of the Junta's Own Promises

Since seizing power in 2020 and consolidating it in a second coup the following year, Goïta's administration has justified military rule as necessary to defeat the jihadist threat that civilian governments allegedly failed to contain. Four years on, that promise remains unfulfilled: armed groups linked to al-Qaeda's regional affiliate continue to pressure Malian forces, including a coordinated offensive in mid-2026 that strained the army's positions in several regions.

It is against that backdrop that the prosecution of one of the army's own celebrated commanders will be read both inside Mali and by outside observers of the Sahel crisis. A military justice system asked to try a decorated general for conspiracy, just as the security situation it was meant to fix remains unresolved, invites the very scrutiny the junta has spent years trying to deflect.

Whether the tribunal treats Sagara as a genuine threat to the state or as a convenient scapegoat for a transition struggling to show results, the coming trial will be one of the clearest windows yet into how far Mali's military rulers are willing to go to police their own ranks and what, if anything, due process still means inside a justice system the junta itself now controls.
