Big Push Road Project: Ohiamadwen residents demand compensation before demolition

Residents of Ohiamadwen in the Shama District of the Western Region are appealing to government and contractors on the Big Push Road project to pay all outstanding compensation before any demolition exercise begins.

Joyce Afrakomaah, a woman in her fifties, said the community has been left distressed after the road—originally planned for the opposite side—was suddenly diverted through their homes and farmlands, putting several families at risk of displacement without compensation.

Residents say the ongoing works on the Takoradi–Cape Coast stretch have already led to the destruction of farms and the marking of buildings for demolition, deepening fears of homelessness and economic hardship.

Madam Afia Amponsaa, a 60‑year‑old farmer, echoed the concerns, stressing that her farm is her only source of livelihood.

She recounted how officials initially assured them the road would bypass their side of the community, only for the contractor to later announce a diversion that now threatens homes, structures and farmlands.

“Because of this unfortunate situation, we have been asked to find places to sleep, yet no compensation has been given to us,” she lamented.

The affected residents are therefore urging government and the contractor to engage property owners and farmers, settle compensation claims, and provide proper relocation support before demolition works commence.

Their concerns come as construction on the Big Push Road project linking Takoradi and Cape Coast intensifies, with more communities expected to be impacted as the project progresses.
