‎Ibrahim Mahama Decorated With France's Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in Accra

Ghanaian contemporary artist Ibrahim Mahama has been honoured with the insignia of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France's most prestigious cultural distinctions, at a ceremony held at the Residence of France in Accra.

The Ceremony
The honour was presented by France's Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Diarra Dimé-Labille, in the presence of Mahama's family, friends, and representatives of Ghana's wider artistic and cultural community. The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is awarded by France's Ministry of Culture to individuals who have distinguished themselves through artistic or literary creation, or who have contributed to spreading the influence of the arts and literature both in France and internationally.

What the Ambassador Said
In her remarks, Ambassador Dimé-Labille spoke directly to the substance of Mahama's artistic practice, highlighting his engagement with Ghana's history and its material legacy. "What makes your work so powerful is I saw the way you look at Ghana and its history, its transformation, its contradiction and the traces that history leaves behind," she said. She noted that Mahama has consistently chosen to work with materials often discarded or overlooked objects that others might pass over, transforming them into large-scale works that speak to questions of labour, trade, and post-colonial history.

Mahama's Response
Receiving the insignia, Mahama thanked his family and everyone who has supported his career. He used the moment to reflect on his broader philosophy about art and national development, stressing the importance of Ghanaians who gain international opportunities returning to invest that experience at home.

"When you get the opportunity to travel outside the country, we as Ghanaian people have to come and make the impact here in Ghana," he said. He also praised existing efforts to support Ghana's creative arts sector, while noting there remains considerably more work to be done to build up the industry.

Ibrahim Mahama is one of the most internationally recognized figures in contemporary African art, known for monumental installations often using jute sacks, decommissioned vehicles, and other salvaged industrial materials that have been exhibited at major international venues, including past editions of the Venice Biennale and Documenta.

Beyond his studio practice, he has invested heavily in Ghana's cultural infrastructure, establishing arts spaces and archives in Tamale and Accra intended to support the next generation of Ghanaian and African artists, researchers, and cultural workers.

His recognition by the French state situates him within a broader tradition of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres honouring international cultural figures whose work has resonated on the world stage, extending French cultural diplomacy into the recognition of African artistic achievement.
