Sokoto Cleric Survives Knife Attack, Mob Kills His Alleged Attacker After Friday Prayers

The Sokoto State Police Command has opened an investigation into a knife attack on an Islamic cleric and the mob killing of the man accused of carrying it out, in an incident that unfolded at a mosque in Sokoto shortly after Friday prayers.

What Happened
The attack took place at Lukuwa Mosque on Friday, September 11, 2026, shortly after the Jumu'at (Friday congregational) prayer. According to the Sokoto State Police Command, an unidentified man entered the mosque after prayers and attacked a cleric, Malam Musa Lukawa, with a knife.

Police spokesperson DSP Ahmad Rufai said the command received a distress call at about 1:50 p.m. from a member of the public reporting the attack. He said preliminary investigations showed that the assailant inflicted deep cuts to Lukawa's neck and left hand before worshippers at the mosque overpowered him.

The attacker was then set upon by an angry crowd and lynched before security operatives could reach the scene to intervene. His body was subsequently taken to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), where he was confirmed dead and his remains deposited at the hospital mortuary pending further investigation.Rufai confirmed that Lukawa survived the assault. The cleric was treated at a specialist hospital and later discharged.

Police Response
The Sokoto Police Command condemned the mob action, describing it as an example of the "jungle justice" it has repeatedly warned residents against. Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, appealed to residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its course "to ensure justice is served appropriately," rather than resorting to street justice against suspects.

Security personnel have since been deployed to the area around the mosque to maintain order and forestall any reprisal attacks. The command has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activity to the nearest security post, while investigations continue into both the original stabbing and the mob killing that followed it.

A Recurring Pattern in Sokoto
The incident adds to a troubling pattern of mob violence in Sokoto State, where suspects accused of attacks on clerics or of religious offences have repeatedly been killed by crowds before police can intervene most notoriously in the 2022 killing of student Deborah Samuel Yakubu and the 2023 killing of butcher Usman Buda, both over blasphemy allegations.

In several of these cases, as in Friday's incident, bodies were rushed to hospital mortuaries by police even as the original victims survived or were rescued, underscoring the speed with which mob action can outpace formal law enforcement in the state.

Authorities have consistently urged Sokoto residents to resist "jungle justice" and to trust the police and courts to handle suspects, warning that mob killings not only violate due process but also risk destroying evidence that could establish the full facts of a case including, in incidents like this one, whether the person killed was in fact solely responsible for the attack.
