The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore and Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has secured police enquiry bail for New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Efya Royal following her arrest by the Police.
Efya Royal was reportedly arrested over allegations that she shared a social media post originally made by popular TikToker, Ghana Jollof.
Her whereabouts remained unknown over the weekend, sparking concerns among family, friends and supporters. The matter gained widespread attention on social media before the Police subsequently confirmed that she was in custody.
Following her arrest, concerns were raised by sections of the public and political actors over the circumstances surrounding her detention, with critics describing the development as an infringement on her fundamental human rights.
Dr Ayew Afriye subsequently intervened in the matter and, after several hours of engagement with the Police, secured bail for the NPP women’s activist.
Efya Royal has since been granted police enquiry bail in the sum of GH¢20,000.
Sources say Dr Ayew Afriye and the NPP Director of Legal Services, Mr Gary Nimako, spent several hours at the Cantonments Police Station on Monday, working late into the night to secure her release.
The intervention by Dr Ayew Afriye has been welcomed by party supporters, who have praised him for what they describe as his commitment to the welfare and protection of NPP members, particularly young activists.
A party source described the MP’s intervention as “a clear demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of party members and his willingness to stand with them in difficult moments.”
Supporters also commended Mr Gary Nimako for joining the effort to ensure that the legal processes surrounding Efya Royal’s detention were properly addressed.
The development has further highlighted growing concerns among some political actors about the handling of social media-related cases and the need to protect the fundamental rights of individuals during investigations.
