A spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, Julius Kwame Anthony, has dismissed claims that Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie is the first Chief Justice to attend the funeral of a relative of a serving government official.

The comments come amid a wider debate over the conduct of Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, particularly following his remarks comparing the performance of state-owned enterprises under the current and previous administrations.

Some New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicators have questioned the Chief Justice's impartiality, arguing that his public engagements and attendance at funerals involving members and associates of the governing party could compromise public confidence in his position.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV's Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, September 8, Kwame Anthony cited the funeral of the late brother of former Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Opare, as evidence that previous Chief Justices had also attended funerals involving NPP figures.

“When the former Chief of Staff's brother died, the Chief Justice was there. It was NPP people who were there. The former Vice President was there, his wife was there. Every person who was significant in government then was there,” he said.

The NDC communicator said former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah attended the funeral and interacted with members of the NPP who were present.

He questioned why the current Chief Justice's attendance at funerals should be viewed differently simply because the deceased or their relatives are associated with the NDC.

According to him, attending funerals is a customary responsibility and should not automatically be interpreted as a political endorsement.

“The fact that you don't like NDC people and their relatives have died, and the state is attending those funerals, and the Chief Justice also attends, doesn't mean you should attack them. Let's stop the hypocrisy,Former CJ Amin Yeboah attended NPP official’s family funeral — Kwame Anthony," he said.
