Golokwati residents decry high electricity bills, power outages

Residents of Golokwati in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region have decried high electricity bills and frequent power outages and have appealed to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area for intervention.

Some residents told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that their monthly bills from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had increased significantly in recent months despite lack of corresponding increase in consumption.

They said the situation, coupled with inconsistent power supply, was affecting households and small businesses, with some struggling to pay their bills.

“The bills are too high, and the lights go off frequently. We are appealing to our MP, Mr Frank Afriyie, to intervene and engage ECG to explain why the bills are high and to address the situation,” a resident said.

Mawuli Gazo, a resident of Golokwati said, “we are tired of paying high bills, we want our MP to help us, we can't continue to bear this problem everyday."

A resident, known as Fo Kwaku, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and called on the government to intervene to ensure stable power supply.

“The bills are too high, and the lights go off frequently. We are appealing to our MP, Mr Frank Afriyie, to intervene and engage ECG to explain why the bills are high and to address the situation,” a resident said.

A trader, identified as Da Yawa, said the frequent outages were affecting her business.

“My sales have dropped because of the power outages. My goods get spoilt when there is no light to keep them fresh,” she lamented.

They called on the MP and the Afadzato South District Assembly to engage the management of ECG to review the billing and to educate consumers on efficient power usage.

The ECG office in the district has yet to respond to the concerns raised by the residents.
