Residents downstream of Weija Dam urged to evacuate ahead of September 9 spillage

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, following a rise in the dam’s water level.

The company said the water level has reached 45.2 feet due to heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.

GWL has therefore urged residents living downstream of the dam to evacuate their communities ahead of the spillage, which it said is a precautionary measure to safeguard the facility.

“As the level is approaching the 46-foot threshold, GWL will resume spillage from Wednesday, 9 September 2026, as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam,” the company said in a statement issued on Monday, September 7.

Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.

GWL also urged residents to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.

It called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assemblies, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, residents’ associations and other relevant stakeholders to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
