Ghana remains committed to ideals and vision of Non-Aligned Movement – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ideals and vision of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

He made the statement in a social media post on Tuesday, September 1, after arriving in Belgrade, Serbia, to participate in the 65th commemorative summit of the movement.

President Mahama is attending the anniversary as a special guest of honour following an invitation from Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

“In Belgrade for the 65th commemorative summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. Our founding President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, played a pioneering role in the establishment of the NAM and Ghana remains committed to the ideals and vision of the Movement,” President Mahama wrote.

The Non-Aligned Movement was formally established in Belgrade on September 1, 1961, in what was then Yugoslavia.

Ghana, under its first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was among the countries that played a pioneering role in the establishment of the movement.

The anniversary summit brings attention to the historical contribution of the founding members and the continued relevance of the movement’s principles in global affairs.

The founding leaders of the movement included Dr Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Indonesian President Sukarno.
