‎Algeria Deploys Four Su-30 Fighter Jets to Niger After Failed Niamey Mutiny ‎

Algeria has dispatched four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niger, marking one of the most direct displays of Algerian military support for Niamey since a failed mutiny shook the Nigerien capital over the weekend of August 28–29, 2026.

What Happened in Niamey
The unrest broke out overnight on August 28 into August 29, when a group of soldiers attempted to detain fellow military personnel inside barracks at Air Base 101, a key military facility in Niamey. Gunfire was also reported near the presidential palace and around Diori Hamani International Airport, as well as at other locations in the capital.

Niger's Defence Minister, Salifou Mody, said security forces intervened and brought the situation under control, regaining custody of the targeted sites.

Algeria's Response
According to a statement from Algeria's Ministry of National Defence, Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Said Chengriha ordered the deployment of two aerial patrols four Su-30 fighter aircraft in total to support Niger's armed forces "in countering the attempt to destabilize the brotherly nation."

The order was issued on the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with the stated aim of deepening cooperation between Algiers and Niamey, "particularly in the military sphere."

The four jets landed at Niamey's airport on the morning of Sunday, August 30, accompanied by an aerial refuelling aircraft. Algeria's Defence Ministry framed the deployment as a response to a formal request from Nigerien authorities, and said the operation reaffirmed Algeria's commitment to reinforcing security and stability in the region.

Niger's Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, received the Algerian delegation and expressed gratitude to President Tebboune and the Algerian people for the support.[4] Algeria's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, separately voiced solidarity with Niger's authorities and condemned the acts behind the unrest.

A Deeper Algerian Role in the Sahel
Analysts note that the deployment represents a significant escalation in the depth of security cooperation between Algiers and Niamey, and is being read as a signal of a more direct Algerian security role in an increasingly contested Sahel.

Algeria has not disclosed further operational details on how the jets will be used, including whether they are intended for combat missions or air-policing duties.

The episode is the first serious internal challenge faced by Niger's armed forces since the July 2023 coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum and installed the current military authorities.[5] It also arrives against the backdrop of wider security volatility across the Alliance of Sahel States bloc, of which Niger is a member alongside Mali and Burkina Faso.
