Mahama announces duty-free aircraft spare parts for domestic airlines

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that aircraft spare parts imported by domestic airlines will no longer attract customs duties and taxes under Ghana’s new Customs Act.

The President said the measure is intended to reduce the cost of aircraft maintenance and improve safety standards within Ghana’s domestic aviation sector.

President Mahama disclosed this while speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Multipurpose Multi-Tiered Car Park and Airport Hotels Complex at the Accra International Airport.

He said he had assented to the new Ghana Customs Act a day earlier, with provisions specifically removing duties and taxes on aircraft spare parts imported by domestic airlines.

“Yesterday I signed my assent to a new Ghana Customs Act and in that Act we have removed duties and taxes on aircraft spare parts,” the President said.

He stressed, however, that the relief applies to domestic airlines.

According to him, the decision is aimed at making it easier for local carriers to access the parts required to maintain their aircraft and keep them in safe operating condition.

“But note, for domestic airlines. We want to make domestic airlines safer and so if they bring any spare parts to maintain their aircrafts they’ll come in duty and tax free,” he added.

The announcement comes as the government seeks to strengthen Ghana’s domestic aviation sector and improve the infrastructure supporting air travel.

The President’s remarks also highlight the government’s focus on reducing maintenance-related costs for local airlines while encouraging compliance with safety requirements.
