‎Saudi Arabia Executes Nigerian National Idris Ibrahim Over Cocaine Trafficking

Saudi Arabia has carried out the death sentence against a Nigerian national, Idris Ibrahim, after he was found guilty of trafficking cocaine into the kingdom.

The execution was carried out in the Madina region on Monday, August 24, 2026, corresponding to 11 Rabi al-Awwal 1448 AH, after both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld the verdict against him.

Details of the Case
According to a statement from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior, Ibrahim was arrested after investigators established his involvement in smuggling the narcotic substance into the country. Following his arrest, formal charges were brought against him, and the case was referred to the competent court for trial.

The court found him guilty and handed down a death sentence as a discretionary (ta'zir) punishment under Saudi law. The verdict was subsequently affirmed on appeal and by the Supreme Court, after which a royal order was issued authorizing the sentence to be carried out in accordance with Islamic law.

The execution took place in Madina on the stated Monday.

Saudi Arabia's Stance on Drug Trafficking

The Ministry of Interior reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting society from the dangers of narcotics, stressing that legal penalties will continue to be enforced against traffickers and dealers found operating within the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia maintains some of the strictest anti-narcotics laws in the world, with drug trafficking classified as a capital offence. Nigerian nationals have featured prominently among foreigners executed in the kingdom over drug-related offences in past years, a trend that has repeatedly drawn concern from Nigerian civil society groups and calls for greater consular support for citizens facing capital charges abroad.

As of this report, Nigerian authorities have not issued a formal statement on the execution of Idris Ibrahim.
