Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says Ghana is gradually emerging from the economic difficulties it inherited when the Mahama administration took office.
She said the country had faced high inflation, a weakened local currency and other economic challenges that had placed significant pressure on citizens.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government is therefore focused on fixing the rules of the economy while directing resources towards critical sectors such as healthcare and education.
“We are slowly but surely getting our way out of that difficulty. Inflation was high. Our local currency was in a bad shape, and so on and so forth," she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang made the remarks when she addressed members of the Ghanaian community during her visit to Rwanda on Tuesday, August 25.
She said the government is investing heavily in healthcare equipment, particularly as it seeks to address chronic illnesses under the Mahama Care programme.
According to her, the programme is intended to reduce the financial burden chronic illnesses place on families while improving access to treatment and equipment in hospitals.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also stressed the need to improve Ghana’s educational system, arguing that attention must be paid to basic education before students reach the secondary level.
“For us, our major concern is before you get to the secondary school, because that’s where it begins. When things don’t go right there, you may not even get up there," said the Vice President.
She said the government is also paying attention to schools that were underperforming, while providing students with the necessary science and vocational equipment to enhance learning.
