‎Ghana Takes a Harder Line on the Recruitment of Its Citizens for the War in Ukraine ‎

TUE, 25 AUG 2026

On Tuesday, August 18, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa spoke bluntly. Following discussions in Moscow, he accused Russia of illegally recruiting Ghanaian citizens to fight on the Ukrainian front. The toll he released is grim: 62 dead, 15 missing.

Sergey Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, acknowledged that Ghanaians had signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense. But he cited voluntary participation, solidarity with a country "that has also helped them fight racism," and financial motivations. A special unit within the Ministry of Defense, he said, is reportedly reviewing the Ghanaian requests, just as it has done for other African capitals.

It is a well-worn line but it no longer holds water. For while Moscow speaks of free choice, accounts emerging from many African countries paint a different picture: young people lured by promises of jobs or training, only to find themselves on the front lines.

Ghana, this time, refuses to settle for that. It demands action.

Behind the "Volunteer" Narrative,
According to Moscow
Sergey Lavrov spoke of voluntary contracts and financial incentives. The facts tell a different story.

The recruitment pattern is the same in several African countries:

Promises of well-paid civilian jobs (security, construction, logistics, driving) or educational opportunities.

Advertised salaries of $2,000 to $3,500 per month, plus a signing bonus of up to $13,000.

Tourist or short-stay visas obtained through intermediaries.

Once in Russia: contracts written solely in Russian, immediate pressure, confiscation of passports, and threats of having to reimburse travel expenses or being deported.

In Ghana, Minister Ablakwa himself described the phenomenon: approximately 272 Ghanaians have been lured since 2022 by "deceptive employment schemes," of whom 62 have died and 15 are missing, according to figures from August 2026. Most of these young people had no military background.

"Solidarity Against Racism": The Russian Narrative Put to the Test by Eyewitness Accounts

Lavrov also invoked solidarity with "a country that has helped them fight racism." Yet evidence of abuse continues to mount.

A video posted on X in early 2026, which has garnered tens of millions of views, once again illustrates this tragic phenomenon. It shows an African soldier being mistreated by a Russian soldier, even though they are supposed to be "brothers in arms." Insulted as a "piece of coal," the man is tied to an anti-tank mine, with the intent of using him as a "suicide bomber," sent to his death with utter contempt.

Beyond this video, testimonies from African soldiers sent to fight in Ukraine expose the lies of the Russian authorities, the racism they face[14], the fear, and the mass deaths that define this recruitment machine.

Ghana's Response
Ghana has taken new measures against these deceptive recruitments, now qualified as human trafficking:

Track and dismantle recruitment networks operating on the dark web.

Raise awareness among job seekers.
Cooperate with international partners.
The 36 African states affected by this quiet interference are gradually becoming aware. It is unthinkable that young people seeking a better future or new horizons should be deceived into fighting and dying in a war that is not their own.
