Suame Interchange phase two set for October opening

The second phase of the Suame Interchange Project in Kumasi is nearing completion, with 87 per cent of the works finished and the section expected to be opened to traffic by the end of October.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, disclosed this on Friday during an inspection tour of the Ashanti Region.

He noted that the second phase includes three overpasses at Anomangye Junction and Magazine New Road Junction, both completed, and Abusuakruwa Junction, which is 98.25 per cent complete.

“The widening of the Offinso Road (N10) into a 2 × 3‑lane dual carriageway is also progressing, currently at 77 per cent, while 13.2 kilometres of local roads out of the planned 15 kilometres have been completed alongside improvements to selected intersections,” he added.

Mr Agbodza explained that the completion of Phase two will ease traffic congestion and pave the way for intensive work on Phase 1, which involves the construction of a three‑tier interchange at Suame, two overpasses at Abrepo and Krofrom junctions, and the widening of the Eastern and Western Bypass roads.

He added that government had made savings on the project while expanding its capacity to accommodate increasing traffic volumes.

“We have seen significant improvements; now we have a date for the possible completion of Phase two, which is the overpasses and the internal roads, which is by the end of October. Where we’re standing will be opened to traffic.

“Asanteman will drive on it for Christmas, and it will be left with Phase one, which is the Suame Interchange,” he said.

The Minister assured that the Ministry will continue to monitor the project to ensure the contractor maintains the pace of work and meets the revised completion target.
