The Global Mercy, the world's largest civilian hospital ship, docked at the Port of Tema on August 17, 2026, marking the fifth field service by international charity Mercy Ships in Ghana and the first since the two sides renewed their partnership in 2025.

The vessel arrived fresh from its previous field service in Sierra Leone and a scheduled annual maintenance period, and its docking was marked by a welcome ceremony attended by government officials, diplomats, healthcare leaders, and members of the ship's international volunteer crew.

What the Field Service Will Deliver
Over the next ten months, the ship's volunteer medical teams are expected to perform between 1,950 and 2,600 free surgeries and provide between 1,610 and 2,145 dental treatments to Ghanaians . The service will also train an estimated 100 to 250 local healthcare professionals through mentoring, education, and clinical placements aboard the vessel.

Ghanaians have been invited to apply for free specialized surgical care, including tumour removal, cleft lip and palate repair, paediatric orthopaedic surgery, cataract surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, obstetric fistula repair, and general and paediatric procedures.

Aligning With Ghana's National Surgical Plan

Speaking at the welcome ceremony, Minister for Health Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh described the visit as part of a partnership stretching back more than 30 years, and one that complements Ghana's National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP), launched in 2024 to expand access to safe, equitable surgical care nationwide.

"It is therefore important that we view the arrival of the Global Mercy not as a stand-alone intervention, but as a collaborative effort to support and accelerate Ghana's own national priorities," the Minister said, adding that the true measure of success would be the field service's lasting impact on patients, healthcare workers, and institutions long after the ship departs.

Akandoh also highlighted the role of the HOPE Center, which supports patients before and after surgery and gives Ghanaian healthcare professionals the opportunity to work alongside international volunteers, and thanked the ministries, agencies, security services, and health institutions that helped prepare for the ship's arrival.

A Three-Decade Relationship
Mercy Ships CEO Dr Michelle White noted the symbolism of returning to Tema, where the organisation's first hospital ship, the Anastasis, docked more than 30 years ago. She said Mercy Ships has trained close to 3,000 Ghanaian healthcare professionals and delivered more than 2,500 surgical procedures in the country since 1991, including support last year for the Ghana Surgical Dialogue, which convened national and international leaders on surgical, obstetric, and anaesthesia care.

Separate figures released around the partnership's September 2025 renewal put the cumulative total even higher, citing more than 2,600 surgeries, 16,700 dental procedures, and training for 139 healthcare professionals delivered across Mercy Ships' prior visits to Ghana.

Dr White said the organisation would work closely with the Ministry of Health, universities, and healthcare institutions including the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Ghana College of Nursing and Midwifery to align the field service with Ghana's national priorities and to offer postgraduate training placements aboard the ship.

A Presidential Welcome and a Ports Sector Endorsement

The 2026 field service follows a high-level meeting in September 2025 between President John Dramani Mahama and members of the Mercy Ships Board, at which the President welcomed the ship's planned return. "Health is not a luxury; it is the foundation of freedom. It is the currency of our dignity. It is our greatest public good, and so I am delighted to welcome Mercy Ships to Ghana," Mahama said .

Minister for Transport Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe welcomed the Global Mercy on behalf of the sector, describing Ghana's ports as a gateway serving the wider West African sub-region, including neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, and pledged the full support of port authorities throughout the ship's stay.

Why the Need Persists
Mercy Ships noted that although Ghana has one of the strongest healthcare systems in West Africa, bolstered by NSOAP, millions of people still face barriers to timely, safe, and affordable surgical care, as surgical specialists remain unevenly distributed and district hospitals continue to face capacity challenges.

"This means many patients live with easily treatable conditions because surgery remains beyond their reach," the organisation said in a statement following the ship's arrival.

Since 1990, Mercy Ships has completed 47 field services across 14 African countries and delivered more than 128,800 surgical procedures worldwide. The organisation says its focus has evolved from direct humanitarian response toward long-term health system strengthening, working through partnership, education, and locally led capacity building an approach it says aligns closely with Ghana's NSOAP .
