Cameroon's 93-year-old President Paul Biya returned to Yaoundé on Thursday, August 20, 2026, after spending 73 days abroad, bringing to an end weeks of intense speculation over his health and questions about who was really running the country in his absence.
A Long Absence That Fuelled Rumours
Biya, the world's oldest serving head of state and Cameroon's leader since 1982, left the country on June 7 for what his office described only as "a short private stay" in Geneva, Switzerland. That stay stretched to more than ten weeks, becoming the longest recorded absence of his nearly 44-year presidency. He landed back at Yaoundé's Nsimalen International Airport aboard a chartered flight from Geneva at around 4:45 p.m. local time, accompanied by First Lady Chantal Biya.
Homecoming Reception
Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency, received Biya on arrival. Hundreds of supporters of the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) lined the streets of the capital, waving party colours and banners as the president's motorcade made its way to the Etoudi Unity Palace. Biya waved to the crowd through a half-open car window but was not shown descending from the plane, and he held no briefings on his return.
Health and Succession Questions Persist
Biya's frequent stays in Geneva have long fuelled rumours about his health. On June 18, Communication Minister René Emmanuel Sadi had denied reports that the president had been hospitalized at a Geneva clinic. Cameroon's constitution places no limit on how long a president may remain outside the country, and government officials, including Higher Education Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo, insisted throughout the absence that Biya remained fully engaged in government business.
Without a sitting vice-president an appointment that rests solely with Biya the opposition described the country as being run on "autopilot" during his absence. Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji is next in the constitutional line of succession in the event of a vacancy, pending a fresh presidential election.
Mixed Legacy, Uncertain Future
Biya began an eighth term in November 2025 after winning a widely disputed October election that triggered protests; authorities acknowledged several dozen deaths in the unrest that followed. His decades in power have coincided with a separatist insurgency in the Anglophone regions, Boko Haram attacks in the north, and a stagnant economy that has left many of Cameroon's mostly youthful population disillusioned.
Opposition leader Prosper Nkou Mvondo of the Univers party was blunt in his assessment of the homecoming: "It makes no difference whether he returns or stays away".
Biya's extended absence has also intensified jockeying among potential successors, as questions over who might eventually replace Cameroon's longest-serving leader continue to dominate political discourse in Yaoundé.
