The Government of Ghana has paid GH¢10.82 billion to bondholders under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), the Ministry of Finance has announced.
The payment, amounting to GH¢10,816,840,318.26, brings the total value of payments made to DDEP bondholders since 2025 to GH¢41.36 billion.
According to the Ministry, the latest transaction represents the third DDEP coupon payment to be made entirely in cash, with the government settling the obligation in full and within the scheduled timeframe.
The Ministry said the timely payment is expected to boost investor confidence, lower Ghana’s sovereign default risk and strengthen the country’s financial credibility.
The latest payment follows an assurance by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson during the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament that the government would honour the coupon payment due on August 18.
Dr Forson said the payment demonstrates the government’s commitment to meeting its obligations under the domestic debt restructuring programme.
The Finance Minister had earlier disclosed that the government successfully made its first DDEP coupon payment of GH¢10.1 billion on February 17, 2026, also in full and on schedule.
Debt restructuring and investor confidence
The DDEP was introduced as part of Ghana’s efforts to restore debt sustainability after the country’s debt crisis. The programme involved restructuring domestic bonds held by banks, pension funds, insurance companies, individual investors and other creditors.
Government has maintained that consistently servicing the restructured debt is essential to rebuilding investor confidence and supporting efforts to restore Ghana’s access to international capital markets.
Dr Forson also disclosed during the Mid-Year Budget Review that Ghana had paid US$2.1 billion in principal and interest to Eurobond holders since January 2025 without placing undue pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
He stressed that consistent repayment of debt obligations, rather than assurances alone, would be critical to restoring confidence in Ghana’s economy.
The Ministry of Finance has consequently assured bondholders, investors and the general public that future obligations under the DDEP will continue to be honoured in full and on schedule.
