Ghanaian Evacuee Dies Shortly After Landing in Accra From South Africa, Autopsy Ordered

A Ghanaian national evacuated from South Africa under the government's ongoing repatriation exercise has died within an hour of landing at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra, deepening the human toll of the xenophobic violence that has driven thousands of Ghanaians out of South Africa in recent months.

What Happened
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the deceased was one of 50 Ghanaians who arrived in Accra aboard an Air Tanzania flight at 5:50 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026. According to the Ministry, the passenger's health began deteriorating about 30 minutes before the aircraft touched down. A medical emergency team stationed at the airport moved in immediately on arrival to try to stabilize the passenger, but the efforts failed, and doctors pronounced the death at 6:55 p.m., less than an hour after landing on Ghanaian soil.

In a statement issued the same day, the Ministry said it was carrying out the necessary formalities to notify the bereaved family and that the remains had been deposited at the Police Hospital in Accra for autopsy. It said further details on the circumstances of the death would be released only after formal engagement with the family. As of this writing, the identity of the deceased and the medical cause of death have not been made public.

The Wider Evacuation Story
The death lands in the middle of a months-long, government-coordinated evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa, launched after a resurgence of xenophobic attacks on foreign African nationals earlier this year. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said 926 Ghanaians were evacuated from Johannesburg in three chartered flights between May 27 and June 7 under the first phase of the operation, with a second phase that began July 26 expected to bring home about 1,000 more. Returnees have reportedly been offered a reintegration grant, a transport allowance, food support, trauma counseling and free National Health Insurance registration.

The evacuation followed the killings of at least two Ghanaians in the violence: Bashiru Isak, 44, a father of three, was fatally shot multiple times in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on June 30, and Kojo Antwi was killed in Prieska, Northern Cape, on July 18. Isak's remains were repatriated to Accra on July 14 after Ghana's High Commission in Pretoria and his families were unable to obtain an official autopsy report from South African authorities, prompting an independently arranged autopsy. Ghana's government has since pressed a formal petition at the African Union Commission over the attacks on African nationals in South Africa.

What to Watch
The Police Hospital autopsy will need to establish whether Friday's death was linked to a pre-existing condition, the strain of evacuation and travel, or trauma connected to the circumstances the returnee fled. Given the pattern already set with the Isak case, families and civil society groups are likely to press the Ministry for a transparent, timely accounting once the post-mortem is complete both to give the family closure and to inform how the government manages the health and welfare of returnees still arriving under the second evacuation phase.
