Mahama reorganises National Security Secretariat with six appointments

President John Dramani Mahama has approved a reorganisation of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), resulting in six new appointments and reassignments with immediate effect.

The changes were announced in a statement issued on Tuesday evening, August 11, 2026, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

According to the statement, the changes form part of efforts to reorganise the NSCS and strengthen its operational and administrative structures.

Under the new arrangement, Major General (Rtd) William Ayamdo, a former Chief of Army Staff, has been appointed Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Operations.

Former National Security Coordinator, Mr Yaw Donkor, has also been appointed Director of Intelligence and Research at the Office of the National Security Advisor.

Mr Adamu Saaka has been appointed Director of Logistics and Transport, while Ms Faustina Effah-Boadi will serve as Officer in Charge of the Human Security Department.

DCOP (Rtd) Peter Ndekugri has been appointed Officer in Charge of the Special Investigations Unit.

ACP Alhassan Osman, meanwhile, has been reassigned to the Ghana Police Service for further deployment.

Two of the appointees have previously held senior positions within Ghana’s security establishment.

Maj Gen Ayamdo served as Chief of Army Staff from February 2017 until his retirement in February 2020, when he handed over to then Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah.

Mr Donkor previously served as National Security Coordinator during President Mahama’s first administration from 2014 to 2017.

The reorganisation comes about four months after President Mahama assented to the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026 (Act 1168), which introduced changes to Ghana’s security governance framework, including the abolition of the Office of the Minister of National Security.

Ghana’s current security architecture is headed by Prosper Bani as National Security Advisor and COP Abdul-Osman Razak as National Security Coordinator. Both were appointed in January 2025.
