Queenmother appeals for re-establishment of police station at Ehi

Mama Ablewor Ashiakpor IV, the Paramount Queen Mother of the Weta Traditional Area, has appealed to the Government and the Ghana Police Service to urgently re-establish a police station at Ehi in the Ketu North Municipality to strengthen security and law enforcement in the area.

She said Ehi was rapidly developing into a commercial hub, with a growing population and increased economic activities, making the restoration of a permanent police presence necessary to ensure the safety of residents, businesses and property.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Mama Ablewor said the absence of a police facility meant residents had to travel considerable distances to access police services, a situation that could delay emergency responses to crime and other security incidents.

“Residents often travel long distances to access police services. This delay puts lives, property and businesses at risk,” she said.

The Queenmother noted that traders, farmers and other residents were particularly affected by the lack of a nearby police presence, stressing that timely security intervention was essential to sustaining economic activities and peaceful coexistence.

She therefore appealed to the Government, the Ghana Police Service and other relevant stakeholders to provide the necessary support and resources to restore the police station at Ehi to serve the community and the wider Weta Traditional Area.

According to her, the re-establishment of the facility would help improve police response times, deter criminal activities and strengthen public confidence in the security services.

The Ehi Police Post was temporarily closed by the Volta Regional Police Command in November 2025 following an attack on the facility by an angry mob, during which some police officers were assaulted.

The incident occurred after the Police had arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Kofi Agbavitor, in connection with the alleged stabbing death of 32-year-old Julius Sablah.

Mama Ablewor said the community was ready to collaborate with the Police and other security agencies to ensure that such incidents did not recur, adding that effective community-police relations were crucial to maintaining peace and security.

Residents who supported the Queenmother’s appeal said the restoration of the police facility had become increasingly important as Ehi continued to expand commercially and attract more people.

They expressed hope that the Government and the Police Administration would consider the appeal and take steps to restore permanent police presence in the community.
