KMA bans unauthorised felling of trees in Kumasi metropolis

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a ban on the indiscriminate felling of trees within the Metropolis, as part of efforts to preserve the city’s status as the “Garden City of West Africa.”

In a public notice on Monday, KMA stated that trees are essential to the city’s beauty, biodiversity, climate resilience, air quality and overall quality of life.

“Accordingly, no person, institution, developer, or organisation shall cut down, remove, prune, or destroy any tree within the Metropolis without first notifying and obtaining the necessary approval from the Physical Planning Department,” the Assembly directed.

Where tree removal is necessary for an approved development or public safety, the owner or developer must formally notify the Physical Planning Department for inspection and authorisation before any action.

KMA warned that individuals or organisations found felling trees without prior authorisation shall be liable to prosecution. Offenders may also be required to replace unlawfully removed trees and bear associated restoration costs.

The Assembly urged residents, developers, contractors, institutions, and property owners to support efforts to protect and enhance the urban environment.

“Together, let us preserve and restore Kumasi’s green heritage for present and future generations,” the statement concluded.

The KMA Public Relations Unit issued the notice.
