Ghana Maritime Authority reaffirms commitment to safer inland waters

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has confirmed its commitment to working with communities and stakeholders to protect lives and livelihoods on Ghana’s inland waters.

As part of its “Life Jackets for Safety and Livelihoods” campaign, the Authority has intensified sensitisation efforts across the Volta Lake, urging boat operators and passengers to prioritise safety.

To support safer travel, the GMA has procured 20,000 life jackets for distribution at a subsidised price of GH¢250 each. Operators purchasing more than five jackets will receive a GH¢20 rebate per jacket, while flexible payment terms, including a 20% down payment spread over five months and rental options, are available.

The Krachi West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Prosper Kwaku Addo, together with the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), also pledged to enforce safety regulations and change public attitudes toward life jacket use.

On his part, the Krachiwura of Kete-Krachi, Nana Mprah Besemuna III, delivered a strong warning that swimming ability alone cannot guarantee survival in a boat accident.

“Between your life and a smelly life jacket, which one will you choose?” he asked, recalling the Okumah boat tragedy where 15 lives were lost.

Authorities and traditional leaders in Kete-Krachi, Kpando, and Dambai have pledged their support for stronger enforcement of the “No Life Jacket, No Travel” policy.

Boat operators have welcomed the initiative and are already working on payment plans. With stakeholder commendation from boat operators, the GMA’s campaign is set to transform safety culture on the Volta Lake and across 125 critical crossing points nationwide.
