A 14-year-old student who opened fire at his secondary school north of Bangkok has been confirmed to have killed five school staff members before turning the gun on himself, Thai authorities said, as a 12-year-old girl wounded in the attack died in hospital, raising the death toll to eight.
What Happened
The teenage suspect allegedly shot dead his grandmother and grandfather at their family home in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026, before travelling to Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, where he was also enrolled as a student. Using a handgun police say belonged to his grandfather, he opened fire on the campus at around 10:00 a.m. local time before killing himself. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the gunman was carrying more than 30 rounds of ammunition when he died, and that he could have caused further casualties.
The Victims
Five members of school staff were killed in the rampage. They were named by the school as deputy head teacher Kittipong Somrat; mathematics teacher Prapaporn Konsila; Thai-language teacher Nantchanatporn Nakplang, herself a former student at the school; guidance teacher Tiwaporn Wanich, who had received a certificate of outstanding teaching just two days before the attack; and Secretary Saifon Sirikitchakajorn.
A 12-year-old girl, a seventh-grade student, was among those critically wounded. The school had appealed on Facebook on the day of the attack for blood donations for her and another injured student. She died in hospital on Saturday, August 8, becoming the first child confirmed killed in the shooting and bringing the overall death toll including the gunman and his grandparents to eight, according to Thailand's Health Ministry.
More than 20 other people were wounded. As of Saturday, 14 people remained hospitalized, with seven listed in critical condition. Officials said most of the wounded were students between 12 and 14 years old.
Aftermath
Relatives on Saturday retrieved eight bodies from Bangkok's Institute of Forensic Medicine the five school staff, the accused shooter, and his two grandparents for funeral rites in their home towns. The head of the institute said most victims suffered a single fatal gunshot wound to a vital area, including the chest.
The school, which has about 3,000 students, released a statement expressing "deepest condolences and profound sorrow" over the girl's death and paid tribute to the slain staff members, saying their "spirit as teachers will remain in our memories forever."
Authorities have not yet determined how the teenager gained access to his grandfather's firearm. Prime Minister Anutin has pledged tighter gun-carry laws following the incident, which police described as the deadliest school shooting in Thailand in recent years and the country's second such attack in 2026, after a teacher was killed and a student wounded in a February shooting in Hat Yai, southern Thailand.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Asia, second only to Pakistan, with the Small Arms Survey estimating roughly 15 firearms per 100 residents as of 2017.
