Guinea's Doumbouya Takes First-Ever Official Presidential Leave Amid Health Speculation

Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya has released official photos from a family vacation in Greece, in what the presidency is calling the country's first officially announced annual leave by a sitting head of state.

A Break From "Years of Intensive State Management"
According to the presidency, Doumbouya's departure from Conakry came after years of intensive state management and was framed as an effort to promote government transparency ahead of the continuation of major national reforms. He was seen off at Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, senior military commanders, presidency officials, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In a message accompanying the vacation photos which show him aboard a yacht off the Greek coast Doumbouya described the trip as a brief moment of respite, while insisting that Guinea's institutions remain fully functional and that nothing would divert his resolve to lead the nation toward its shared goals.

The "Simandou" Detail
One image, shared by TRT Afrika, shows a member of the president's entourage wearing a shirt bearing the word "Simandou" a direct nod to Doumbouya's flagship economic development initiative, Simandou 2040, tied to the exploitation of an iron ore deposit valued at an estimated $15–20 billion.

Health Speculation Overshadows the Optics
The vacation has not escaped controversy. The trip has renewed speculation about Doumbouya's health, following visible weight loss and a February absence that stretched into three weeks after an African Union summit in Addis Ababa an absence a presidential adviser later attributed to a routine medical check-up. French investigative journalist Thomas Dietrich has also flagged flight-data anomalies, noting that a private jet registered in the Virgin Islands departed Conakry around the same time as the presidential aircraft, both routing through Mykonos before continuing to Larnaca, Cyprus fueling further speculation, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

Military Moves to Reassure the Public
Shortly after the president's departure, Chief of the General Staff, General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, addressed the nation on television, reaffirming the armed forces' loyalty to Doumbouya and Guinea's institutions, and urging citizens "not to give in to disinformation" and to "remain calm in their daily activities."

Context: A Presidency Born of a Coup
Doumbouya seized power in a September 2021 coup that removed former President Alpha Condé, later leading a transition before being elected president at the end of 2025 becoming, notably, Guinea's first civilian president when sworn in this past January. The opposition has criticized his government as governing through fear, a backdrop that has sharpened scrutiny of both this vacation and the recurring questions about his health.
