Four people have lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries following a dynamite explosion at Aboso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, is reported to have been triggered during an attempt by residents to kill a snake that had allegedly been terrorising the community.

Speaking to the media, the Assembly Member for the Akutuase Electoral Area, Emmanuel Eshun, said the incident began when a resident spotted the snake and alerted a nearby shop owner. The resident reportedly fired a warning shot in an effort to scare the reptile away.

According to him, the situation took a tragic turn when a security officer at the shop attempted to shoot the snake. The bullet allegedly struck slabs of explosives being sold at a nearby shop, setting off a powerful explosion.

Mr Eshun said three people, including the shop owner, identified as Kofi Fletcher, died instantly at the scene. A fourth victim later succumbed to injuries while being transported to a health facility, bringing the death toll to four.

Several others who sustained serious injuries are currently receiving treatment at various health facilities. Authorities are yet to release the identities of all the victims.

The explosion has raised concerns over the reported sale of explosive materials within a residential community.

The Ghana Police Service and other relevant authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged illegal sale and storage of dynamite in the area.
