Delegate system is destroying Ghana – Asiedu Nketiah

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, says Ghana’s delegate system has evolved into a major source of corruption, arguing that excessive spending in internal party elections has compromised the country’s democratic process.

Speaking on AmbassadorTV monitored by MyNewsGh.com, he said delegate politics has shifted from a democratic exercise to one heavily influenced by money.

“Now huge sums of money are paid to delegates,” he said.

According to him, research has shown that many parliamentary aspirants spend more money securing party nominations than they eventually earn throughout their four-year tenure as Members of Parliament.

“The amount of money these people spend before they go to Parliament is more than all the salary they receive over four years,” he stated.

Mr. Nketiah argued that politicians often seek financial backing from private interests to fund these expensive contests and later become indebted to those sponsors.

“Because the MPs are paying, people engaged in illicit businesses fund them, and when they come to power, they cannot criticise their sponsors,” he said.

He warned that the trend poses a serious threat to good governance and accountability if left unchecked.
