Tension In Katsina As Man Scammed Bandits' Leader Of N95 Million To Supply Guns

Tension has gripped parts of Katsina State following revelations that a man allegedly defrauded a notorious bandit leader of N95 million (approximately $67,100 at the current parallel market rate of N1,415/$1) after collecting the money as payment for a promised arms deal that never materialised.

How The Scam Unfolded
According to the account made public by Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu, popularly known as "General," the lawmaker representing Musawa/Matazu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, the suspect had approached the bandit kingpin with an offer to procure and deliver high-grade weapons. Convinced by the pitch, the bandit leader reportedly handed over the full sum of N95 million as payment in advance.

Rather than fulfil his end of the bargain, the suspect allegedly vanished with the entire amount and has not been seen since, leaving the bandit leader and his group without the weapons they had paid for.

Why This Matters
The episode offers a rare and telling glimpse into the underground economy that sustains banditry in Katsina and the wider North-West region, where illicit arms procurement has become a lucrative and apparently risky trade even for those who deal directly with armed groups. That a bandit leader himself could be defrauded on this scale underscores the informal, trust-based nature of the black-market arms pipeline feeding the insurgency, and the vulnerabilities within that same criminal network.

Security analysts note that such episodes, while darkly ironic, rarely lead to formal prosecution, since neither party to the transaction can approach law enforcement without incriminating themselves. It remains unclear whether the bandit leader's group has since retaliated or launched its own search for the suspect.

Hon. Aliyu's disclosure adds to a growing list of accounts from lawmakers representing bandit-affected constituencies in Katsina, who continue to shed light on the shadowy financing and logistics networks propping up armed groups in the state.
