AMA fines Rawlings Park food vendors GH¢1,000 each for defying National Sanitation Day directive

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has fined several food vendors operating at Rawlings Park in Accra GH¢1,000 each after they failed to suspend business activities to participate in the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.

The vendors were issued on-the-spot fines by the Assembly’s enforcement team after they were found selling despite directives requiring businesses within the area to temporarily halt operations while the nationwide sanitation exercise was underway.

The enforcement exercise forms part of the AMA’s renewed efforts to ensure strict adherence to sanitation regulations and reinforce public participation in initiatives aimed at improving environmental cleanliness across the capital.

According to the Assembly, the penalties are intended to serve as a deterrent to individuals and businesses that disregard directives issued in support of the National Sanitation Day campaign.

The AMA has consistently stressed that the success of the initiative depends on the active cooperation of residents, traders and other stakeholders.

The National Sanitation Day exercise is designed to improve hygiene in communities, reduce indiscriminate waste disposal and encourage responsible waste management practices. The initiative also seeks to foster a culture of environmental responsibility by mobilising citizens to take part in regular clean-up activities.

The AMA has reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation by-laws and warned that individuals or businesses found flouting directives during future sanitation exercises could face similar sanctions.
