NPP protest over Sedina Tamakloe's acquittal unnecessary – Alex Abban

Former Gomoa West MP, Alexander Abban, has opposed the opposition New Patriotic Party's (NPP) planned demonstration over the acquittal and discharge of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.

According to him, the matter should be handled through the legal process rather than through street protests, arguing that the demonstration could create the impression that the former MASLOC boss was released because of her political connections.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, August 1, Abban said the NPP's planned action could undermine confidence in Ghana's justice system.

“I disagree. Let us deal with it as a matter of law,” he said.

He explained that protesting the Court of Appeal's decision could fuel perceptions that the judiciary's credibility is being questioned because the beneficiary of the ruling is a politically exposed person.

“When we go on that demonstration, we are still actually fueling the perception that the lady has been freed because she's a political actor or politically exposed person,” he stated.

Abban maintained that disagreements with court decisions should be addressed through legal avenues available within the justice system, rather than through actions that could cast doubt on the credibility of the courts.

“But for me, I don't think that we should do that, because as soon as we go for that demonstration, we are also trying to say that the very justice system that convicted the woman, which has been used now to free her, the very justice system that we believe in, now we don't believe in it anymore,” he added.

The NPP has announced plans to organise a nationwide protest on August 6, 2026, over what it describes as actions and practices undermining Ghana's democracy and the rule of law.

The party's National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the protest would involve other political parties, civil society organisations, professional groups, youth movements and other concerned citizens.

The planned demonstration follows the Court of Appeal's decision to acquit and discharge Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, who had earlier been convicted by the High Court and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
