Court of Appeal acquits and discharges former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe, overturns 10-year sentence

The Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, overturning her conviction after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judgment, delivered on Thursday, July 30, reverses an earlier decision of the Accra High Court, which in April 2024 convicted Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu in absentia on multiple charges, including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, money laundering and procurement-related offences.

She was extradited from the United States and returned to Ghana on June 9, 2026, to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence imposed by the High Court.

The former MASCLOC boss subsequently appealed the conviction, asking the Court of Appeal to set aside both the conviction and the sentence.

In her appeal, filed on February 10, 2026, Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu's lawyers argued that the charges brought against her were fundamentally defective and did not provide sufficient particulars of the offences alleged.

The appeal challenged her convictions on several counts, including conspiracy to steal, stealing, causing financial loss to the state, causing loss to public property, improper payment of public funds, unauthorised commitment resulting in financial obligation to the government, money laundering and breaches of the Public Procurement Act.

The Attorney General's Office opposed the appeal and urged the court to uphold the High Court's decision.

However, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the former MASLOC CEO, holding that the prosecution failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The ruling effectively quashes her conviction and sentence, bringing the criminal proceedings against her to an end.
