The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has confiscated smoked and dried fish exposed to unhygienic processing conditions following a viral video showing individuals preparing fish under conditions that could endanger public health.
The video, posted by social media platform Buz Stop Boys, showed fish being processed in an unhygienic environment along the coast, prompting concerns about the safety of fish products consumed by the public.
The FDA said its rapid response team was dispatched to the location on Monday, July 27, in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Ghana Police Service to assess the situation and take immediate action.
"As an immediate measure, the fishes that have been exposed to unhygienic conditions were confiscated," the statement read in part.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, the FDA said the fish processors were educated on the public health risks associated with poor handling practices as part of efforts to prevent similar occurrences.
The Authority added that it will engage fish processors and fish mongers in identified coastal districts to promote safe and hygienic fish processing practices and protect consumers.
"The FDA and its collaborators will engage fish processors and fish mongers in the identified coastal districts on good hygienic practices to safeguard public health and safety," it noted.
The FDA advised the public to purchase smoked and dried fish only from reputable sources, inspect products carefully before purchase and ensure fish is properly washed and cooked before consumption.
