Atta Mills' example still leads us 14 years after his death — Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has paid tribute to former President John Evans Atta Mills on the 14th anniversary of his passing.

The NDC Chairman described the former President as a leader whose humility and integrity continue to inspire many.

In a social media post on Friday, July 24, Asiedu Nketiah reflected on the late President's leadership qualities, saying his legacy remains a benchmark for public service and national leadership.

The former President died on July 24, 2012, at the age of 68 while serving as Ghana's President, becoming the first sitting Head of State in the country's Fourth Republic to die in office.

He was succeeded by then Vice President John Dramani Mahama, who was sworn into office the same day in accordance with the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

"Fourteen years ago today, Ghana lost President John Evans Atta Mills, the Asomdwehene, a man who epitomizes gentleness and leadership. Those of us who knew him still measure ourselves against his example. His humility, his integrity, and his quiet strength remain a standard worth returning to. Rest well, Prof. Your example still leads," Asiedu Nketiah wrote.

President Mills is widely remembered for his emphasis on peace, constitutional governance and national unity, earning the title Asomdwehene, meaning "King of Peace," from many Ghanaians in recognition of his calm and conciliatory leadership style.
