The Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission (DPC), Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo, has pledged the Commission’s full support for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as the utility embarks on a programme to strengthen its systems through four international management standards.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Kavaarpuo described ECG’s adoption of ISO 27001, ISO 22301, ISO 20000 and ISO 31000 as a decisive step towards building a secure, resilient and future-ready electricity provider.

He noted that the initiative goes beyond certification, representing a cultural shift in how ECG protects information, manages disruptions, delivers technology services and responds to institutional risks.

“There can be no AI economy without reliable electricity, and there can be no trusted digital economy without secure and resilient systems,” Dr Kavaarpuo said.

The Executive Director mentioned the central role of electricity in powering Ghana’s digital transformation, noting that ECG’s grid must evolve into a modern, integrated and digitally enabled system capable of supporting data centres, communication platforms and artificial intelligence.

Dr Kavaarpuo pledged that the DPC would continue to provide regulatory guidance to ensure ECG’s compliance with the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).

He urged the company to embed privacy, security and accountability into the design of new systems and infrastructure, stressing that information security is a core component of data protection.

Commending ECG’s leadership, he singled out Managing Director Ing. Julius Kwame Kpekpena, Board Chairman Mr Amuna, and Chief Information Security Officer Mr Roger Akrong for driving the initiative and translating ambition into coordinated institutional practice.

He also welcomed the participation of the Cyber Security Authority, describing it as evidence of the close relationship between cybersecurity, data protection, business continuity and national security.

“The measure of success will not be the launch itself, but whether these standards improve the security, resilience and quality of service ECG provides to the people of Ghana,” Dr Kavaarpuo concluded.
