Liberia's Biggest Ever Drug Bust: What the $370 Million Duazon Seizure Reveals About a Nation Under Pressure

Liberian authorities have confirmed the largest drug seizure in the country's history, after a joint security raid on a suspected storage facility in Duazon, a town roughly 20 kilometers east of Monrovia, uncovered high-purity cocaine with an estimated street value of $370 million. Several suspects, including two foreign nationals, were arrested during the operation, though no formal charges had been announced by the time authorities briefed the press.

Inside the raid
Officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), backed by the Liberia National Police, the Executive Protection Service and other units under the country's Joint Security architecture, stormed a warehouse in Duazon, Margibi County, armed with a court-issued search and seizure warrant. What they found were dozens of sealed suitcases and boxes packed inside a truck cargo later confirmed through laboratory testing to be cocaine.

Police say one of the two foreign suspects was travelling on both Spanish and Colombian passports, while the other held a Serbian passport. Liberia's police chief, identified in briefings as Coleman, described the bust as the outcome of a long-running investigation rather than a chance discovery: "Between 2018 and 2023, apparently there was a resurface of major trafficking and transiting in Liberia. Over the last one-and-a-half years, we've been surveilling them, and this is the result of that operation."

Authorities say it remains unclear where the shipment originated or where it was ultimately headed; investigators were reportedly already tracking the network when the two foreign suspects arrived in the country and were arrested.

Vice-President Jeremiah Koung praised the security forces involved and warned that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law "regardless of who you are" a pointed remark given past criticism that well-connected suspects in similar cases have evaded accountability.

Part of a widening pattern
The Duazon raid did not happen in isolation. It comes barely six weeks after a separate seizure at Roberts International Airport on June 8, 2026, where security officers intercepted six cargo boxes falsely declared as food seasoning and textiles. Inside were nearly 200 compressed blocks of cocaine, valued at roughly $19.2 million and destined for export at the time, the largest such seizure in Liberia's recent history.

That case triggered political controversy after critics accused authorities of moving too slowly, with some suspects allegedly able to leave the country before arrests were made. President Joseph Boakai responded by establishing a Joint National Security Investigative Task Force to trace the network behind the shipment, an investigation that remains ongoing.

Liberia's exposure to transnational trafficking is not new. A 520-kilogram cocaine haul was intercepted at Monrovia's seaport in 2022, and since taking office in 2024, President Boakai has reshuffled leadership at the country's drug enforcement agency multiple times amid mounting pressure to address the problem. Taken together, the Duazon and Roberts International cases suggest a country increasingly used as a storage and transit point along a South American–to–West African cocaine corridor that has, in recent years, drawn in states from Guinea-Bissau to Cabo Verde.

A test of institutional resolve
For Liberia, the significance of this bust extends beyond the headline dollar figure. It arrives as a test of whether the country's security institutions long scrutinized for capacity gaps and, at times, for political interference can convert intelligence-led operations into credible prosecutions. The Vice-President's promise of accountability "regardless of who you are" will be measured against what happens next: whether charges are filed, whether the network's financiers and endpoint buyers are identified, and whether the case follows the money beyond the warehouse in Duazon.

As West African governments from Accra to Bissau confront the same trafficking corridors, Liberia's ability to see this investigation through rather than let it stall as earlier cases have will say much about the region's collective capacity to push back against organized narcotics networks operating in the shadow of weak port and airport controls.
