RUC relaunches president's scholarship to empower female enrolment in STEM and Agriculture

Regentropfen University College (RUC) has relaunched its President's Scholarship for Females as part of activities marking the institution's 10th anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to increasing female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and agriculture-related programmes.

The scholarship, first introduced in 2022 by the Founder and President of RUC, Rev. Dr. Moses Asaah Awinongya, SVD, offers a 50 percent tuition fee waiver for two academic years to eligible female students pursuing selected STEM programmes at the university.

The scholarship covers students enrolled in BSc. Agriculture for Social Change, B.Ed. Mathematics with ICT, BSc. Computer Science, and BSc. Information Technology, with the aim of encouraging more women to pursue careers in fields that are critical to Ghana's socio-economic development.

Speaking on the rationale behind the initiative, Rev. Dr. Awinongya said the scholarship is inspired by the remarkable contributions of women who have played instrumental roles in the growth and development of Regentropfen University College.

He paid tribute to Professor Agnes Atia Apusigah, the institution's first female Vice President, describing her as a trailblazer whose leadership and commitment to women's empowerment continue to inspire the university community.

"Prof. Agnes Atia Apusigah was the first female Vice President of our institution, and she also founded and funded the award for the best graduating female student," he said.

The RUC President also dedicated the scholarship to the memory of his late mother, Mama Alice Akankuba-Mah Abinglogro, whose passion for supporting young women left a lasting legacy despite her lack of formal education.

"Though she was not formally educated, she made sure young women came to RUC, and she helped finance them so they could build their future," Rev. Dr. Awinongya stated.

According to him, the university believes the values and sacrifices of these women should continue to inspire future generations through educational opportunities that empower young women to excel in science, technology, agriculture, and mathematics.

"We feel it's important to encourage more women in agriculture, science, mathematics, and technology," he added.

In addition to the President's Scholarship for Females, RUC has also introduced a special scholarship package for students pursuing BSc. Accounting.

Under the package, beneficiaries will receive a 60 percent tuition fee scholarship for the first two academic years and 40 percent tuition support for the remaining two years, a move the university says is intended to strengthen professional accounting education and help produce competent accountants to support Ghana's economic development.

Located at Kansoe, Namoo in the Upper East Region, Regentropfen University College is a private tertiary institution accredited to offer degree, diploma, and postgraduate programmes through its Faculties of Applied Sciences, Humanities, and Health Sciences. The institution has built a reputation for promoting practical, community-centred education and expanding access to higher education in northern Ghana.
