EOCO detention is not something I want to experience again — Miracles Aboagye

Spokesperson to the 2028 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Denis Miracles Aboagye, has revealed the discomfort he endured during his detention at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Miracles Aboagye, an aspiring NPP National Communications Director, was arrested at the Accra International Airport on Saturday, July 11, upon his return from a trip abroad.

EOCO has said he and former Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCCoD) accountant Gerald Appiah are under investigation over alleged offences including conspiracy to steal, stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering and other financial crimes involving about GH¢55 million.

He was released on Tuesday, July 14, after meeting bail conditions of GH¢50 million with three sureties, two of whom were required to be justified.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Hitz FM on Tuesday, July 21, the NPP communicator described his stay in EOCO custody as uncomfortable, saying confinement alone was enough to make the experience difficult.

"It's very discomforting. It's not the same as sleeping in your room. The mere fact that you know you can't open the door and go out at will, it's a challenge," he said.

Despite describing the detention as unpleasant, Miracles Aboagye acknowledged that EOCO was carrying out its mandate and said he holds no ill will towards the investigators.

"Confinement is not a good thing. I don't want to do it again, and I don't wish it for anybody. They[EOCO] have to do their job. I have to do mine... Ultimately, I am good, and I thank everybody who stood in solidarity with me," he added.
