Mahama: Ghana Ready to Host AU Extraordinary Summit on Health

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana is fully prepared to welcome African Heads of State, Ministers of Health, members of the media, and development partners to Accra for the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit on Health.

The two-day summit, scheduled to take place from July 21 to July 22, 2026, is expected to bring together key stakeholders from across the continent to deliberate on some of Africa's most pressing public health challenges.

In a statement, President Mahama emphasized Ghana's commitment to advancing health outcomes across Africa and expressed optimism that the summit would strengthen continental collaboration in the health sector.

The summit's agenda will focus on accelerating efforts to end AIDS and tuberculosis by 2030, reducing maternal mortality rates, and strengthening health systems to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare services throughout the continent.

The gathering comes at a critical time as African nations continue to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union's health priorities under Agenda 2063. Discussions are also expected to examine financing mechanisms, healthcare infrastructure, disease surveillance, and partnerships needed to build resilient health systems capable of responding to future public health emergencies.
