Energy Ministry announces final phase of Kumasi power infrastructure upgrade

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that the final phase of the Kumasi Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade and the transformer upgrade at the Kumasi Ahodwo Substation commenced on July 20, 2026.

A press statement issued by the Ministry said the projects, undertaken in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), aim to strengthen electricity infrastructure to meet the growing energy demand in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.

According to the statement, Kumasi has for many years relied on a single circuit transmission line connecting the Anwomaso (K2) and Kumasi (Ahodwo) (K1) substations.

It said the line has become increasingly overloaded due to population growth and rapid commercial expansion, making it unable to meet rising electricity demand in Kumasi and surrounding communities.

The statement explained that the K1 K2 project will replace the existing 364MVA single-circuit transmission line with a modern double-circuit transmission line rated at 488MVA each, giving a combined capacity of 978MVA.

It said the upgrade would more than double transmission capacity between the two substations, improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply, and create additional capacity to support future residential, commercial and industrial development.

The Ministry said the project has reached its final stage, with about 90 per cent of foundation works and 67 per cent of tower assembly works completed as of July 16.

“The remaining works include dismantling the existing transmission line, erecting new transmission towers and stringing new conductors,” it added.

The statement noted that the existing transmission line would be de-energised to allow the works to be carried out safely.

It said customers supplied by the Kumasi (K1) and Anwomaso (K2) substations could experience temporary and localised power interruptions during scheduled construction periods.

It added that GRIDCo and ECG would provide advance notice of planned outages and make every effort to restore electricity supply before the evening peak demand period.

The statement also announced that GRIDCo would replace one of the existing 66MVA transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation with a new 145MVA transformer.

It said the replacement would increase transmission capacity, improve operational flexibility, reduce loading on existing equipment and enhance the reliability of electricity supply across Kumasi and surrounding communities.

The Ministry urged residents to stay away from designated construction areas and comply with all safety instructions issued by project personnel throughout the construction period.

The statement said the final phase of construction is expected to be completed within three months and appealed to residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation.

It added that although the temporary power interruptions may cause inconvenience, the completed projects will strengthen the electricity network and support the long-term development of Kumasi, the Ashanti Region and the country.
