Withdraw TikToker Camilla Alhassan’s second prosecution, other pending cases - Minority

The Minority in Parliament has called on the Ghana Police Service to immediately discontinue plans to initiate a fresh prosecution against convicted TikToker Camilla Alhassan.

The call follows a statement issued by the Police on July 17, 2026, announcing plans to arraign Alhassan before the High Court on a separate charge of false communication under the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

Camilla Alhassan was arrested after a video circulated on social media in which she made comments about President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady.

She was subsequently charged with publishing false news and engaging in offensive conduct. She pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted, receiving a one-year prison sentence for the offence of offensive conduct.

Although she has already been sentenced, the Police indicated that they intend to pursue an additional prosecution over the alleged publication of false information.

“The Ghana Police Service is also taking steps to put the convict before the High Court on the separate charge of False Communication under the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775),” part of the Police statement said.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the Minority Caucus, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticised the Police's decision, describing the planned prosecution as unacceptable.

He called for the immediate withdrawal of all pending prosecutions brought under Sections 207 and 208 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, including the proposed case against Camilla Alhassan.

“We demand, first, the immediate withdrawal of all pending prosecutions under Sections 207 and 208 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act including the second prosecution threatened against Camilla Alhassan,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.

The Minority also urged the authorities to discontinue similar prosecutions and release individuals currently serving sentences for related offences.

Mr Afenyo-Markin specifically referenced Kwame Nkrumah, who he said was sentenced to six months' imprisonment over a TikTok video, and called for his discharge as well.

“The discharge of any person currently serving a sentence including Kwame Nkrumah…who was jailed 6 months or so ago over a TikTok video,” he stated.

The Minority maintains that the planned prosecution of Camilla Alhassan should be withdrawn along with other similar cases currently before the courts.
