Turkish President Gives NATO Leaders Engraved Revolvers: What This Says About Ankara's Security Diplomacy

An unusual diplomatic gesture unfolded at the NATO Summit held in Ankara, Türkiye, from July 7 to 8, 2026, when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave each of the alliance's member-state leaders a personally engraved revolver, complete with six live rounds of ammunition.

The summit marked the first time Türkiye had hosted such a gathering since Istanbul in 2004, and it took place against a backdrop of tension over NATO defence spending targets, continued support for Ukraine, and the possibility of the United States lifting its longstanding ban on F-35 fighter jet sales to Ankara.

The Gift Itself
The revolver, identified in some reports as the Gümüşay, is a Turkish-made copy of the Colt Python chambered in .357 Magnum, produced by the Turkish arms manufacturer Sarsilmaz. Each leader's name was engraved on the barrel of their individual weapon, which arrived in a presentation case alongside six cartridges.

According to available reporting, Erdoğan's intent was to showcase the strength of Türkiye's defence industry, which over the past two decades has transformed from a major arms importer into an increasingly self-sufficient producer of military hardware, including drones and warships.

How Leaders Responded
Reactions among the recipients varied considerably. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joked that his own gift of maple syrup "kind of undermatched" what he received in return. Canada's RCMP deactivated his revolver, with officials suggesting it may eventually be displayed in a war museum.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told journalists on his flight home that despite Erdoğan providing a personal note waiving Türkiye's export controls on the weapon, UK law prevented him from bringing it into the country. His revolver remains in Ankara, to be decommissioned.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever handed his revolver directly to airport police for safekeeping. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said hers would be donated to a military museum. Croatian President Zoran Milanović said he was unaware he had even received the gift until after returning home.

Several other countries, including Poland, the Netherlands, and Sweden, left their revolvers at their respective embassies in Ankara or in customs holding, pending clearance procedures. It remains unclear whether US President Donald Trump received one, and if so, what became of it.
